Suzan Mtegha won the title of Miss Malawi 2012

LILONGWE– Contestant number 14 Suzan Mtegha, 24, is the new Miss Malawi.

The Mzuzu-based Suzan won the title with a landslide on Friday in Lilongwe before a full house and in a colourful event that had a mixture of suspense and anxiety.

Her win was greeted with sounds of approval of ululation and ovation from the audience.

“I enjoyed the contest. This is what should Miss Malawi be like,” said one Lilongwe fan, Shupi.

Five judges, including former Big Brother Africa (BBA) rep Hazel Warren, poet and artist Quabaniso Malewezi, gave Suzan the thumbs up on unquestionable integrity, intelligence, beauty, fitness, character, morals and talent.

Susan, who has taken over from faith chibale, literally overnight became half a million richer, thanks to beer brewer Carlsberg and Blockbuster, also won a trip to Hong Kong, donated by National Lottery Group, and other prizes.

Mayamiko Msosa, 22 who works for Parliament in Lilongwe, scooped the first princess title, while second Princes was Jacqueline , 19, from Mzuzu, a Biomedical Science third year student at Mzuzu University who emerged second Princess.

Miss Zambia Zindi Hanzala and Miss Zimbabwe Samantha Shuma were also in attendance at the beauty pagent, where Gender, child and Community development minister Reen Kachere was the guest of honour.

First Lady Callista Chimombo was initially to be the guest of honour.

Suzan, a fashion designer and dancer, holds an advanced diploma in Information System from the Lilmikokwing University of Botswana.

She is a cousin to Miss Malawi 2006 Perth Msiska.

She wants to study for a master’s degree in IT. And don’t even think bother asking her out for she has already a boyfriend.

She simple said she felt “honoured” to win the big title and she wants to help fight deforestation in a country which has the highest deforestation rate in southern Africa.
